I Cheated On My Boyfriend

This Valentines Day is a sombering reminder that I cheated on my boyfriend. What perhaps makes me feel even more awful is that he does not know. I know that I am a horrible girlfriend especially in light of how wonderful he is. I am not trying to say that he is perfect or that our relationship is but infidelity, lies, and deceit should not be tolerated in any relationship that is built on trust. I have violated that trust by first committed such a dastardly act but the cloak of lies that I am hiding behind. So what do I do? As I sit in my office at look at the beautiful arrangement of flowers I feel like a fraud of a girlfriend but I also know that if I tell him that I cheated on him it would hurt him immeasurably. So now I am faced with the dilemma of just keeping my secret to myself or telling him.

I have gotten so much opposing advice from friends that has made me even more confused on what to do. Some friends feel that telling him would be selfish because I would only be absolving my guilty conscience, while others have gone with the classic, “honesty is always the best policy” advice. Ordinarily, I would be a staunch advocate of telling him the truth but I know that the cheating happened one time; the result of too much flirting and one too many cocktails at a company retreat in the sexy town of New Orleans. The next morning I felt horrible and tried in vain to wash the previous night’s indiscretion from my body, of course to no avail. I picked up my phone a dozen times to call my boyfriend and tell him about the huge mistake I made. Cowardice halted my call each time. I love him too much to hurt him and I love our relationship to much to see it possibly dissolve. I love being with him and I hope to one day call him my husband. This is one of the best relationships I have ever been in and I know you’re wondering if it is so great how could I cheat on my boyfriend. Trust me, I beat myself up over it everyday. So, I guess the real question is, do I trust that our relationship will survive this?
